Studies on the Taj Mahal

Want to go further in the study of Taj Mahal?

This site offers you a file on the different symbols that are in the Indian monument, but also broader notions on the Muslim and Hindu religious symbolism since these two religions are intertwined, the Mughals being Muslims settled on the Hindu lands. You also have a text on the history of Taj Mahal art. It is not a ready task for the students but a help which lists, in the form of different chapters that one finds in this teaching, the principal notions to know.

This chapter also contains a file on pietra dura, a technique of stone marquetry that has been widely used on the Taj Mahal. This technique is European, it comes from Florentine craftsmen who went to India to work on the monument. This is to say their fame, from the seventeenth century.

Finally to finish and a bit like a gag, you have access to a folder on French restaurants called "The Taj Mahal" or having a name that contains the words "Taj Mahal". They are classified by region, it's quite fun to see what it gives, although the interest of this study is almost nil ...

For those who are interested in symbolism in art, especially Muslim art, the symbols of the Taj Mahal are ... (Read more)

The symbolic aspect accounts for a large part of these studies. From a more practical point of view, the history of art highlights the artists, their lives, their opinions to highlight the way in which they are put forward through the works. It also explains the impact of a work on the public in a cultural context, demographic ... (Read more)

Pietra dura

The pietra dura is the art of carving the stone, from a general point of view. Designed and mastered by the Florentines at the end of the 16th century, it consists in making decorative pieces by incrustations of stones on marble plates previously abraded. The result, when of good quality, is exceptionally fine. The color game makes the work close to reality.

The pietra dura is therefore an art technique of lapidary marquetry. The works in pietra dura often represent floral motifs, plants, or natural settings. More recently this technique is used ... (Read more)

Restaurants named Taj Mahal

If you were to create an Indian restaurant in France, what would you call it? Probably not "New Delhi" or "Bombay", there is a good chance that you choose the "Taj Mahal", which is one of the most famous wonders of the world and is an iconic landmark of the India, with, in addition, a strong sentimental connotation. Well know that you would not be the only one to choose this name since there are 95 establishments that bear this name, most of them being restaurants.
